SPREE DAY by John “Moose” Duquette

Saturday, September 16th was a picture perfect day for our 11th annual Spree Day event for the families of Why Me. Why Me is a Worcester MA based non-profit organization that helps children with cancer. Why Me is dedicated to improving the quality of life for any family being treated for pediatric cancer in a New England area hospital. They provide families with social, emotional, and financial support. All services are free of charge.

The Spree Day is a day filled with food and fun. The event is held at the 200 Sportsman’s Club in Webster, MA. Every year the club generously donates the grounds and kitchen for the event. The goal of the Spree Day is to get everyone to kick back and reconnect with the outdoors. The day is all about putting away cell phones, staying off social media and getting out of the house.  The two main events are fishing and archery.  Doc - the go to guy for fishing - teaches the kids how to bait a hook and cast. The only time a phone comes out is to take a picture as one of the kids proudly smiles with their catch, whether a kiver or a small bass, the excitement is the same.

After breaking for a great lunch prepared by grill masters Steve, Tim, and Ben, everyone heads back to the fields to either continue fishing or learning to shoot a bow and air rifle. Every year Jeff and Steve arrange decoys and targets making a kid friendly area for the kids. They are taught how to safely handle the bow or gun and the proper way to shoot. After practicing, they compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies in two different age brackets. But it is mostly just all good fun for the participants!

The Spree Day is not only a great way of giving back to our community, it also achieves the Northeast Outdoors Foundation and Northeast Big Buck Club missions of enjoying and preserving the great outdoors. Hopefully some of the kids will continue to build a passion for fishing and/or hunting as they continue into adulthood.

Thank you to all of our family and friends for their help and support year after year. This event would not be possible without them.
